В марте 1965 года началось полномасштабное вмешательство Соединенных Штатов Америки (США) в военный конфликт во Вьетнаме. Весь мир был потрясен происходившей во Вьетнаме трагедией, что послужило причиной многочисленных дискуссий не только в рамках межгосударственного диалога, но и внутри религиозных и межрелигиозных сообществ. Одной из наиболее заметных межхристианских организаций в 1960-е гг. был Всемирный совет церквей (ВСЦ), фактически руководивший экуменическим движением. На заседаниях ВСЦ в 1965–1975 гг. вьетнамская война стала одной из наиболее острых тем. Последнее усложнялось также тем фактом, что входившие в ВСЦ церкви территориально находились по разные стороны идеологического противостояния. Не прошла данная проблематика и мимо православных членов ВСЦ. Среди них наибольший интерес к вьетнамской проблематике проявила Русская православная церковь, последовательно критиковавшая роль и военное вмешательство в конфликт США и во многом формировавшая позицию по вьетнамскому вопросу Всемирного совета церквей.
