The aim of the study is a comprehensive analysis of the situation and activities of the Russian Orthodox Church in Austria in the post-war period (1945-1991). The work is aimed at studying the processes of restoration of church life, relations with the Soviet and Austrian authorities, as well as the role of the Russian Orthodox Church in preserving the cultural and religious identity of the Russian emigration.
The methodological basis of the study is a combination of general scientific and special historical methods. The principle of historicism and a systematic approach will allow us to analyze the situation of the Russian Orthodox Church in dynamics. Source analysis, including archival materials and periodicals, and the comparative historical method will form the basis for objective conclusions about the church life of the Russian diaspora.
The problems of the study are focused on the key aspects of the existence of the Russian Orthodox Church in Austria in the post-war period. The authors examine the history of St. Nicholas Cathedral in Vienna and the Russian Orthodox presence in Austria, highlight the conditions of the Russian Church in Austria during World War II, and provide detailed information on the post-war development of Russian Orthodoxy in Austria. Using the example of the restoration of St. Nicholas Cathedral in Vienna and the activities of Archimandrite Arseny (Shilovsky), the authors examine the internal processes of parish life, the financial situation and social security of the clergy, and describe the dynamics of the development of the St. Nicholas parish. The authors touch upon the issues of confrontation between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR), ecumenical initiatives, and the relationship between the Vienna deanery and the Soviet diplomatic mission. Particular attention is paid to the events of legitimization of the status of Russian parishes and the conditions for the creation of the Vienna and Austrian diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church.
