The purpose of the article is to analyze the texts of memoirs and monographic works of figures during the period of reforms in the USSR in 1985-1991. The article discusses the use of the Soviet historical past by politicians during the reforms in order to confirm the need for their implementation. As a justification for the actual reassessment of this past, the authors of the reforms rely on the need proclaimed by the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev to expand publicity and democratize public life in the USSR. As a result of the research, the author draws the conclusion that the transformation of public consciousness and the complete denial of the Soviet past was a historical mistake, which ultimately led to a change of ideology and the formation of anti-communist discourse during the reforms.
