Abstract

The purpose of the article is to analyze the sources and historiography that reveal Russian-Azerbaijani relations in 1991–2014. In the modern multipolar world, against the backdrop of dangerous ongoing military-political conflicts on the Eurasian continent and the aggravation of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, the development of geostrategic cooperation between Russia and Azerbaijan has become especially relevant. Over the 34 years that have passed since the collapse of the USSR, relations between the countries have moved to a new level, covering not only regional but also international aspects.

The modern Russian-Azerbaijani historiography reviewed by the authors of this article includes the last 24 years of research on bilateral relations. These works were analyzed on the basis of a representative source base that covers various areas of interstate cooperation.

The methodological basis of the study is the principles of historicism and objectivity. It seems that the basis for future research should be a civilizational approach. Recently, Russia and Azerbaijan have been actively developing a strategic partnership, despite Western sanctions against Russia, which contributes to the deepening of economic and political cooperation between the two countries every year. The authors concluded that Russia and Azerbaijan have gone through an extremely difficult path of building trusting relations, which, with all the desire, cannot be called «temporary cooperation» today.
