Pilgrimage to the Holy Land from Russia in 1880th and activities of the IOPS

The purpose of this article is to identify the features of the development of pilgrimage from the Russian Empire to the Holy Land in the 1880s based on the use of source data. The creation of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society in 1882 made it possible to increase the number of pilgrims to the Holy Land by the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th centuries to 10 thousand people. The article's problematic concerns the identification of the conditions for the intensification of pilgrimage to the Holy Land in this period. The methodology is based on previously developed approaches to the study of pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Previously, a number of researchers determined that the pilgrimage process was associated with the need to strengthen the presence of the Russian Empire in the Middle East due to the desire to increase spheres of influence in the declared region. The intensification of this trend occurred after the unsuccessful Crimean War for Russia. Due to this, emphasis was placed on the development of missionary activity of the Russian Church in this region. A similar practice was used in the Middle East by the British Empire. In particular, Anglican missionaries were active in this region during this period. The Russian government, in turn, began to pursue a similar policy. The materials of this article are based on this approach to examining the history of pilgrimage in the period specified in the article, and also rely on the established historiography, associated with the development of church and diplomatic activities of the Russian Church in the Middle East during this period. As a result of the study, it was possible to establish that during the 1880s there was a significant increase in pilgrimage from the Russian Empire to the Holy Land. This occurred as a result of the creation of the necessary infrastructure for the stay of pilgrims in the Holy Land. An important role in this was played by the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society formed in 1882.
