Abstract

The aim of the study is to consider the historical process of the state and the Russian Orthodox Church in the matter of helping the starving people of the Volga region, one of the stages of which was the expropriation of church valuables by the Soviet authorities. The study builds a chronology of the adoption of documents and the creation of specialized bodies in the early 20s. The relevance of this study is due to the need for a systematic analysis of the events and facts preceding the expropriation of church antiquities. The study used a traditional scientific approach to the study in compliance with the principle of historicism, scientific objectivity and integrity. The implementation of these principles was carried out through a combination of the following methods of scientific knowledge: the historical-systemic method, which allows you to study the events that occurred in this period of history as a single chain with systemic connections; historical analysis, when working with surviving documents. What can be further developed thanks to the research Results In our research, among other things, we set the task of providing facts related to both the activities of government bodies and the Russian Orthodox Church, which will allow us to form an objective view of the overall picture of what happened. Such an approach makes it possible to reveal the cause-and-effect relationships of historical events unfolding on a national scale, which served as the driving force for the confiscation of church valuables in the regions, including the Oryol region.

Thanks to the conducted research, we can trace the origins of a large-scale campaign to confiscate church valuables that covered the entire country, including the Oryol region, which will allow us to see the place of this phenomenon in Russian history. The obtained data on the order of the figures for the confiscated property can shed light on the further spending of funds, according to the selected priorities, since it has already been proven that not all of them were spent on the needs of the starving.
