The purpose of the study is to conduct a historical analysis of the process of organizing and holding the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus in the Orel-Bryansk Diocese in 1988, which coincided with the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Orel Diocese.
Methodology. Using historical, genetic, chronological and diachronic methods, the work examined the process and related social and organizational vicissitudes of the preparation and implementation of regional festive events in honor of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus, which marked the beginning of changes in state-church relations in the Orel region. The identification of key trends in the development of the dialogue between the clergy and authorities in the Orel region, the essence of their relationship on the eve of the solemn anniversaries became possible due to the historical and phenomenological method.
Problem. The author reveals the key events in the Orel-Bryansk diocese, its interactions with the city authorities in 1988. Based on the results of historiographical analysis, the regional specifics of the relationship between government officials and the clergy of the Orel-Bryansk diocese in holding local celebrations on the occasion of two events of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus and the 200th anniversary of the Orel Diocese were demonstrated.
Research perspectives. The results obtained during the study can serve as a basis for an in-depth study of the regional aspect of state-religious relations within Soviet society during the late «Perestroika» (1988-1991), which emerged during the celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus, and also serve as afoundation for further research on the state of Orthodoxy in the Orel region in the last quarter of the twentieth century.
The result of the research was a comprehensive analysis of the activities of the Orel-Bryansk Diocese during the preparation and holding of festive events of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus in 1988. Finding themselves in a difficult situation, with the loss of two ruling bishops and an uncompleted celebration program, the Orel clergy, under the circumstances, were able to review and approve a new celebration plan, which successfully coincided with a change in government attitudes towards the Russian Orthodox Church. Against the background of the changed domestic political course of the country, the support of the initiatives of the Orel clergy by the regional authorities in holding two festive anniversaries on the territory of the Orel-Bryansk diocese became the basis for the formation of new trends in the development of state-church relations within the region.
