The Status of the Russian Language in the Educational Space after the Collapse of the USSR in Russia and Uzbeki-stan in the Second Half of the XX – Early XXI Century

The purpose of the study is to conduct a comparative analysis of models and practices of teaching Russian as a foreign language in the systems of higher education of Russia and Uzbekistan in the second half of the XX – early XXI century. The author aims to identify the general patterns and national specifics of this process in changing historical and political conditions.
Problem. The scope of the study includes a critical understanding of the process of transformation of the status and functions of the Russian language in the educational space of the two countries after the collapse of the USSR. The question is raised about the change of the goals, teaching methods and the contingent of students, as well as the way the language situation in Uzbekistan developed historically affects modern educational strategies.
Methodology of the work is based on the principles of comparative historical and sociolinguistic analysis. The materials used are normative documents, curricula, statistical data and scientific publications of the relevant period. The sources were both archival materials and modern educational standards of Russia and Uzbekistan.
Novelty of the research is seen in the complex, diachronic comparison of two national educational systems in the field of teaching Russian as a foreign language in the second half of the XX – early XXI century. Special attention is paid to the transition from the unified Soviet model to nationally oriented practices in Uzbekistan and the search for a new paradigm in Russia itself.
Research perspectives are related to an in-depth study of specific methodological adaptations in the Uzbek audience and the analysis of the new role of the Russian language as a language of interethnic communication and professional mobility in the Central Asian region. The importance of taking into account the historical context for building an effective modern language policy is emphasized.
The results show that the ways of spreading the Russian language in the two countries have significantly diverged since 1991. It is shown that in Russia, teaching Russian as a foreign language has developed in the context of the internationalization of education and the attraction of foreign students. In Uzbekistan, such teaching has been reoriented towards utilitarian, often professional goals within the framework of a bilingual policy. The author comes to the conclusion that the key difference is the initial sociolinguistic status of the language, which determined all further educational logic.
