The Dynamics of Rural Population in the Orel Region in the XVIII–XXI Centuries on the Example of the Village of Kurakino-Preobrazhenskoe

The purpose of the study is to explore the population dynamics of rural areas of the Orel Region in the XVIII–XXI centuries on the example of the village of Kurakino (Preobrazhenskoe) and against the background of demographic development of Russia.
Problem. The authors consider the crisis of the Russian countryside. The article is devoted to the search for the historical origins of this phenomenon and the identification of factors that, using the example of S. Kurakino, would mitigate the negative consequences of common processes.
The methodology is based on the principles of historical demography and local history. The materials include data from revision fairy tales, metric books, population censuses and modern statistical reports. The sources were also archival documents on the history of the estate and the economy.
Novelty. The study is based on an analysis of the demographic history of one particular village as a model for the entire region. Special attention is paid to the role of the human factor – the activities of key owners and sustainable economic forms that have determined a special path of development of this location.
Research perspectives. The presented model can be applied to study other villages, which will create a more complete picture of the regional agrarian and demographic history. The necessity of further study of the role of individual economic entities in maintaining the viability of rural settlements is substantiated.
Results.
In all the historical periods of its three-century existence, a large village has been one of the centers of economic activity and socio-cultural life of the location. The most successful periods in the history of the village and its inhabitants are associated with its owner at the turn of the XVIII–XIX centuries Prince Alexei Borisovich Kurakin Senior, who created an exemplary estate with economic initiatives that developed until the twentieth century, as well as with the activities of the Kurakinsky business entity, established in 1918-1920 as a state farm and currently existing in the organizational and legal form of a closed joint-stock company. The negative demographic processes of rural depopulation have also affected the village of Kurakino (Preobrazhenskoye), but in a smoothed form compared to the vast majority of rural settlements in the European center of Russia.
