The purpose of the study is to conduct a historical analysis of processes of the rehabilitation, the study of the life path and attempts to canonize the church figure A. A. Saiko. The relevance of the problem is derived from the importance of studying the formation of spiritual values in the Soviet era.
Methodology. The author used chronological, historical-genetic and diachronic methods, which helped in characterizing A. A. Saiko as a victim of political repression and reviewing the process of collecting archival materials and documented evidence for his canonization. The application of the historical and phenomenological method allowed to reveal the specifics of the procedures for perpetuating the memory of the Christian ascetic in the post-Soviet period.
Novelty. The author focuses on the problem of honoring A. A. Saiko, who became a moral example for believers and residents of the Orel region during the years of repression and the Great Patriotic War. The article considers the change in the attitude of the authorities and the church towards A. A. Saiko as a bearer of folk religiosity. Special attention is paid to his rehabilitation in the 1990s. The article considers the process of collecting materials about A. A. Saiko, organized by the Orel Diocesan Department for the Canonization of Saints.
Research perspectives. The results obtained in the course of the study can form the basis for studying the processes of the influence of public opinion formed in the religious environment on the official assessments of the clergy of the Russian Orthodox Church in the context of changes in state-church relations in the post-Soviet period. They can also be used to study the state of Orthodoxy in the Orel region at the end of the XX – beginning of the XXI century.
Results. The result of the conducted research was the consideration of the processes related to the preparation of the canonization of A. A. Saiko in the post-Soviet period. The article shows how the Orel Regional Commission for the Restoration of the Rights of Rehabilitated Victims of Political Repression succeeded in meeting the requests of Orthodox believers to achieve the rehabilitation of A. A. Saiko. The materials collected at that time served as the basis for the beginning of the process of A. Saiko's canonization.
