The purpose of the study is to analyze data on various types of crime in Soviet Russia in the late 1920s.
Problem. The end of the 1920s was a time of not only the development of a new socio-economic model, but also a noticeable surge in crime. Historical science has not yet sufficiently studied the specific reasons that predetermined the increase in the number of crimes by individual types, as well as the social appearance of the criminal during this transitional period.
Methodology. The research is based on the methods of historical, comparative and statistical analysis. Data on various types of crimes are used as sources. The author analyzes the reasons that led either to increase in the number of crimes or to decrease in it. Special attention is paid to the social appearance of the criminal: gender and age criteria, social origin and position.
Novelty. The novelty of the study lies in the fact that the structure of crime in the late 1920s is comprehensively considered for the first time, highlighting such types as political, official, property crimes and crimes against the person. The author focuses on the relationship between the changing socio-economic model and the dynamics of criminal activity.
Results. The author concludes that the end of the era of the new economic policy was marked by a surge in crime, which was natural for the events taking place in the country. The reasons that predetermined the increase in the number of crimes in some types and their decrease in others are analyzed. It is shown that political, official, property crimes and crimes against the person had different dynamics and determinants. All these facts give the author grounds to assert that the social and economic transformations of the late 1920s were accompanied by a serious deformation of the criminal situation.
Discussion. Further study of the archival materials of judicial and law enforcement agencies will expand the statistical base and trace the regional characteristics of crime. A comparative analysis of the criminal situation in the late 1920s is relevant as well as the previous and subsequent periods of Soviet history.
