French Foreign Policy During The July Monarchy (1830-1848) Through British Eyes: An Analysis Of British Periodicals

The purpose of the study is to analyze the British public's perception of French foreign policy during 1830–1848 as reflected in contemporary periodicals.
Problem. The article examines Anglo-French relations during the July Monarchy, taking into account their complexity and constant variability. The author pays special attention to the construction «the image of “the other”», whose the analysis has become an integral part of studying international relations in different historical periods. Due to the constant close interaction with the French and the changing foreign policy situation, a certain image of France has formed in the minds of the British. The author also raises the issue of its change in different historical periods and its dependence on the foreign policy situation. The research topic is relevant due to the fact that the imagological aspect of the study of international relations is increasingly being used in modern historical science.
Methodology. To achieve this aim, the study employed narrative, chronological, comparative-historical methods, and textual analysis. The first two were used to arrange the narrative, while the latter two were necessary for working with sources. The materials consisted of British periodicals from the second quarter of the 19th century, namely newspapers and journals. Additionally, a review of historiography on French foreign policy during the July Monarchy was carried out.
Novelty. The novelty of the research lies in a comprehensive analysis of British periodicals. The author uses British newspapers and magazines as the main type of sources for studying the July monarchy and its perception by the British for the first time.
Results. As a result, the author concludes that the British public's perception of France's foreign policy during the July Monarchy is ambiguous. The author shows that many actions of the French government were perceived positively by the British, as they were aimed at improving Anglo-French relations and contributed to building a course towards «cordial agreement». At the same time, the author concludes that British publicists noted France's desire to pursue an independent foreign policy without taking into account the interests of its allies, as well as the harm that some decisions caused to the British economy.
Discussion. This article lays the foundations for further study of the image of «the other» that was formed in the consciousness of the British in relation to France and the French nation not only during the July Monarchy, but also in other historical periods.
