Ecumenical Activities of the Russian Orthodox Church in Austria (1945-1970)

The purpose of the study is to study the key stages of ecumenical cooperation of the Russian Orthodox Church in Austria during its most intensive development from the 1950s to the 1970s.
Problem. The activities of the Russian Orthodox Church in Austria after World War II remained on the periphery of research attention for a long time. Historians have more often focused on internal church processes in the USSR, while the foreign experience of interfaith dialogue on a neutral European platform has been poorly studied.
Methodology. The research draws on the principles of historical reconstruction and institutional analysis. The materials include documents reflecting the participation of the Vienna and Austrian Dioceses in ecumenical events. Attention is paid to interfaith dialogue with Catholics, Old Catholics, and Anglicans, as well as relations with local Orthodox churches.
Novelty. The novelty of the study lies in the fact that the participation of the Russian Orthodox Church is highlighted in details for the first time precisely in the Austrian ecumenical context. The author emphasizes the uniqueness of the situation: the geopolitical status of Vienna as a neutral platform at the junction of the interests of East and West has turned the Austrian capital into an important center of inter-church dialogue.
Results. It is shown that the uniqueness of the Austrian situation was complemented by the diocese's close institutional cooperation with Soviet diplomatic missions, which predetermined the symbiosis of religious and diplomatic tasks. The author concludes that Vienna in the second half of the 20th century became one of the key platforms for ecumenical dialogue with the participation of the Russian Church. The article analyzes the diocese's participation in ecumenical events and meetings that took place in the Austrian capital at that time. It is emphasized that it was Austria's neutral status that created unique conditions for inter-church communication during the Cold War.
Discussion. Further study of the archives of the Vienna Diocese and the Soviet diplomatic missions will reveal the mechanisms of decision-making on participation in ecumenical meetings. A comparative analysis of the Austrian experience and the activities of the Russian Orthodox Church in other European countries during the same period is relevant.
