The purpose of the work is to study the main milestones of the scientific and creative activity of the Russian and Polish scientist R. M. Orzhentsky during his stay in Odessa.
The foundations of his professional and ideological orientation were formed precisely in that period, which was later conventionally called "Odessa". At the same time, some of the described events also took place in Zhitomir, Kherson and Kyiv. During the «Odessa» period of the scientist's work, he achieved his first scientific successes. He became an authoritative practicing lawyer and statistician. However, the main area of his scientific work was political economy. Here the young scientist was a supporter of the psychological direction. This scientific direction was close to marginalism and the Austrian scientific school.
The article is written in compliance with the principles of scientificity, historicism and objectivity. The author focuses on the initial period of the famous economist's life: early biography, defense of his dissertation, teaching activities, etc. It is especially emphasized that the psychological approach to economics was substantiated in the works of R. M. Orzhentsky. This principle is based on the peculiarities of human choice. It is concluded that it was during the Odessa period of his work that R. M. Orzhentsky was able to demonstrate his first scientific achievements. He defended his master's dissertation. He formed the rules and principles of his scientific approach. It is necessary to emphasize the significance of Orzhentsky's contribution to the development of scientific and cultural life of the region. He not only contributed to the dissemination of knowledge, but also became an important link in the chain of formation of scientific traditions associated with education and the encyclopedic approach. His activities allow us to better understand how, in the conditions of growing urbanization and cultural dynamics, Odessa became an important center of intellectual life.
