The purpose of the study is to analyze the features of the content and presentation of the Book of Armenian Canons of 719 by John the Philosopher (Odznetsi).
The relevance of the topic lies in studying one of the most ancient church-canonical sources reflecting the history of legal consciousness of the Armenian people. In the context of modern transformations of society and an appeal to historical roots, it is important to understand how these canons contributed to the formation of national identity and faith. The study of this text allows for a deeper understanding of the concepts of justice, morality and ethics inherent in Armenian culture, as well as their influence on the development of legal consciousness. This opens up new prospects for the study of historical, cultural and religious aspects of Armenian society.
The methodology of the study involves an integrated approach, including historical-analytical and textual methods. The historical-analytical method made it possible to study the context of creation of the canons, taking into account the social, political and religious aspects of that era. Textual analysis provided a deep understanding of the content and structure of the work, as well as its canonical and cultural meanings. The comparative method helped to compare with other church-canonical texts. This made it possible to identify the unique features of Armenian legal consciousness.
In the result, the author shows how the code of traditional Christian-Armenian church canons and regulations later formed the basis of Armenian legal codes of the Holy Vadapets David Alavkavordi (1130) and Saint Mkhitar Gosh (1184), which later became the main church and secular laws of Armenian spiritual, moral, legal, state, political and everyday life.
