The purpose of the article is to analyze biographical data about the Venerable Macarius of Altai, his ideas, concepts and features of his missionary activity.
The research was conducted using historical, comparative and deductive methods, as well as content analysis. This allowed to examine the process of formation of the personality of Venerable Macarius and the main stages of his life. It provided an opportunity to reveal his personal characteristics and approach to conducting missionary and educational activities. It created the basis for analyzing the peculiarities of the spread of veneration of the saint, both in the Orel region and in Russia.
Archival documents, periodicals, literature and literature with the life story of the Venerable Archimandrite Macarius were studied.
As a result of the research, a chronologically correct biography of the Venerable Macarius of Altai was constructed, his main ideas and concepts of his activity, and the particularities of the approach to converting non-believers to the Orthodox faith were described. The process of acquiring the relics of Macarius of Altai in February 2024 was investigated, which became a key and significant event for both the Orel and Barnaul Dioceses, as well as for the entire Russian Orthodox Church. The reasons for the special status of the saint among the canonized ascetics of the Russian Orthodox Church are analyzed. St. Macarius was the founder of the missionary mission in Altai, an educator and the author of the translation of the Bible from Hebrew into Russian. While preaching in Altai for many years, he created the concept of organizing missionary activities. He also founded an Orthodox Missionary Society and attracted a wide range of people from all classes of Russia to the Orthodox faith. While in Bolkhov, as rector of the Trinity Optina monastery, Saint Macarius continued to conduct educational activities among the inhabitants of the Orel region. The discovery of the relics of Macarius of Altai revived interest in both the spiritual and missionary legacy of Macarius of Altai, as well as in the history of his life and service.
