The purpose of the article is a comprehensive analysis of the formation of diocesan registers in the 19th – early 20th centuries as an important historical source.
Comparative, chronological and other methods of historical research were used. A source analysis was also used. Diocesan registers serve as documentary evidence of the changes in social thought and spiritual life in various historical periods. This periodical published various information about church life, social structure and cultural peculiarities of that time. They allow researchers to trace how the church reacted to the challenges of the time, including social changes, political crises and wars, as well as how it contributed to the formation of the cultural identity of society.
Diocesan registers are important for studying the interaction of the church with other cultural institutions, such as education and art. They published articles about the successes of local educational institutions, theaters and art exhibitions, reflecting the church's interest in developing culture and education in regions.
As a result, the main stages of the formation of Diocesan printed publications, their functional purpose and typological features are revealed. A number of key directions in the activities of the diocesan press have been investigated. The first one is the the history of the formation of Diocesan registers. The second direction is a review of the typology of church periodicals, as well as its genres, illustrations, design and graphics. The third direction of the research is a consideration of the subject matter and content of church periodicals. And finally, the article examines how Diocesan periodicals influenced public opinion of Russian population in prerevolutionary regions.
