The purpose of the article is to research the process of the restoration of the Assumption Monastery in the city of Orel during the period of the monastery's revival in the late 1980s – early 1990s.
The main stages of the monastery's restoration process are outlined using historical, genetic and chronological methods. The author considers the history of the monastery's revival from 1987 to 1997, in comparison with earlier stages in the life of the monastery and the Bishop's House: in the pre–revolutionary period, from the foundation of the monastery to the beginning of the last century; in the Soviet period, a description of the looting and destruction of the Bishop's House complex from 1917 to the middle of 1980s.
Based on archival documents and a personal source, the study traces the relationship between political, ideological, and legislative changes in the country and the reopening of the Assumption Monastery at the end of the last century. The study analyzes and comments on the historical source on the history of the monastery's revival, which is being introduced into scientific circulation for the first time, the "Diary of Works at the Assumption Monastery in the city of Orel." Due to the source analysis, which includes external and internal criticism of the text, the article examines the "Diary of works at the Assumption Monastery in Orel." The reliability of the information contained in this document has been established, the novelty of the facts and descriptions of the "Diary" has been determined. Comments have been compiled on the personalities and events mentioned in the text. The facts given in the source under study are compared with historical documents from the State Archive of the Orel region and from the collections of the Orel Museum of Local Lore. The article reveals the importance of the Assumption Monastery in the history of the city of Orel. It is shown that the role of the monastery was not limited only to its religious function. This was important to justify the need for its revival at the end of the 20th century.
