The purpose of the study is to reconstruct in the process of forming the collection of items from the pre-revolutionary collection of Old Russian painting and sculpture of the Orel Diocesan Museum or the Museum of the Orel Church Historical and Archaeological Society (hereinafter referred to as the MOCHAS).
The relevance of the research is due to the need to reconstruct the collection of the pre-revolutionary Diocesan museum in order to identify preserved exhibits, to identify the presence of objects that were part of the pre-revolutionary collection of the Diocesan Museum in the churches of the Orel Diocese.
The work is written using the methods of consistency, analysis and synthesis, as well as the chronological method. This made it possible to study the process of searching and classifying monuments of Old Russian painting and sculpture in the Orel Diocese in the second half of the 19th – first quarter of the 20th centuries.
The sources of the study are the unpublished materials with pre-revolutionary reports of the MOCHAS. These materials are scattered and distributed across many written sources. They contain the items received in the museum, their dating and place of manufacture. As a result of the research there was completed reconstruction of the list of icons from the collection of the Orel Diocesan Museum (the MOCHAS Museum). An analysis of the history of the study of church antiquities (artworks of Old Russian painting and sculpture) was carried out, the main directions in the development of scientific knowledge about their study in the Orel region by members of the MOCHAS were determined. A set of archival materials and pre-revolutionary documentation was collected, introduced into scientific circulation and analyzed. Archival materials previously not used by researchers, unpublished previously documents from Russian archives (GAOO, GIM OPI) and pre-revolutionary periodicals from the Local History Department of the Orel Library of I.A. Bunin predominate in these materials and documents. The conclusions are based on research work of the author as a certified expert of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation with artworks of icon painting and church sculpture.
